Halloween 2009

Here is Noah at his very first door...he thought he was done after this one house & could NOT believe that you got to go to every door! He was super excited. It's so fun to see your kids so happy & excited. And I loved visiting with neighbors & seeing them love on all the kids in the neighborhood. On a moral note: have had a hard time with Halloween for awhile now- never sure how I was going to handle it when we had kids old enough to do the Halloween thing. I saw a movie on the roots of Halloween & I've been horrified ever since. But we reconciled it with the fact that, it's not about that anymore & really we (America) have really mixed a bunch of different traditions to get Halloween anyways. And from my experience this year, it's just so innocent & fun for the neighborhood. We had so much fun with our neighbors.Of course, Mom dressed up too! So fun in my mousy costume. It was like 85 on Halloween so I didn't put the full costume on until it got dark.
Noah was one McQueen's pit crew members. I found it at the thrift shop that same day for $2! Love it! He wore it for 3 straight days. So cute.
We tried to dress David up as a piece of cheese to go with me but poor guy was super sick so all he could really pull together was an 80's skier (but really it's all the stuff he wears today). Nate was tiger & ya know he didn't really know what was going on. He liked all the commotion though.

Gearing up for Fall

TROUBLE!

Apparently Superman & Lions make good superhero pairs. Noah loves to ware his costumes & since they are so warm I figured why not bring em' (along with everything else in our house) to Yosemite! Everyone loved it, including my parents.

I prayed for patience & God granted 2 BOYS!!!

Ode to Bestefar

Here is Bestefar (David's Dad, Grandfather in Norwegian) about ready to put the boys to bed so that David & I could go out- not really a date- we did this newleywed game & answered some questions for some high school students for Free-to-Be (non-profit group speaking to teens about the option of abstinence until marriage- I use to work there). D's Dad is so fantastic with our kids- he's always right at their level whether it's reading, teaching them Norwegian (Noah understands pretty much everything he says- isn't that incredible!!!), or just fooling around. He's such a good grandfather. Nate is weened! It's so bittersweet- although so great to be able to have some more freedom (like having someone else be able to put him to sleep for example) BUT I so miss the tender moments together snuggling on his chair before bedtime. Aaahhh, how the time flies.

Muchas Gracias!!!

THANK YOU SO MUCH!!!
This is SOOOO overdue! We have been meaning to write, blog, email or whatever! to say a big thank you to all of you who supported us on our Costa Rica Mission's Trip to Tuis, Costa Rica. We have been back for about 2 months now but the trip feels like it was a year ago. We had a very rich time. We were probably most blessed by seeing how instrumental the Voz Que Clama Mission has been to providing life to the Tuis people. Through the language study program many families receive wages as they are either providing homes for the students or serving in some way (driving people, cooking meals, cleaning, etc). Not only financially but spiritually as well- the mission functions as a church as well so many fellowship there & get to experience the joy of the Lord through all the amazing people that make Voz Que Clama such a hot spot in Costa Rica. Additionally, these families get to interact with so many foreigners which brings so much diversity to their lives. They have loads of stories, pictures & gifts from all over. Below is a picture of two of the kids that we stayed with. Marcos & Anthony. They were so sweet with our boys.
Below is David shopping for all the paint supplies at the local "Home Depot." He & Steve Cabezud (one of the other adults on the trip who use to run a painting business- there are no coincidences with God) did not really know how much paint it would take to do these murals so they had to come back a few times. David is holding one of the print outs of the designs that a local US print company did for us. Our idea was to use a tool to perforate the drawings & then "throw" chalk onto them so that the designs would more or less be outlined on the wall for us. We thought this would ensure that we could actually complete the mural on time. Well, this process did not exactly work so David arrived on the work scene a little earlier than the rest of the team to actually sketch out the logos. Although more work for him, it was also more rewarding & probably produced better logos.
Below is one of the more simpler mural paintings but worthy of display as it's the motto in Costa Rica- it loosely means "Take it Easy" or "It's all Good." In total there were 20 logos that spread across the entire wall. It took 5 half days of cleaning, prep'ing & painting for it to be completed. The wall can be scene from the Voz Que Clama Mission (as it sits on a hill) & was marveled by all passing by (the school is located on the main road of Tuis).
Here's Elaina painting one of the more detailed murals. All the youth did an amazing job working in the heat with like 100% humidity (okay maybe it was more like 85%). Afterwards they would frequent the beautiful river. We found a spot that was relatively safe where we could dip in & cool off.

I anticipated that I would be able to help out more with the painting & just being with the youth BUT that is not what the Lord had for me. I was able to be with my kids in another country- that was enough! We had some bumps- Nathan got double ear infections, a reaction to the first antibiotic prescribed & a fever with diarrhea (spread out across the whole trip not really leaving room in between for healthy days) & Noah had a high fever & diarrhea as well. I spent a few days traveling to & fro between towns visiting the doctor trying to communicate medical histories in Spanish! Everyone was so gracious from the people that drove me to the nurses & doctors helping. The people & the scenery were perfect for each other- just beautiful. David & I were more than blessed by the kindness, joyfulness & hospitality of everyone we met. AND the country is just incredible. It is lush, fruitful, & abounding with color. Apparently the waves aren't half bad either- David was just a few hours away from epic waves soo...I think we'll be going back. From all that we learned we'll just do some things a little differently. More toys, more medicine, more food & probably our own house. Sleeping & eating (the basics) were two of the more challenging parts of my day- with the ages of our two kids we have different nap needs so getting one to be quiet when the other was sleeping was near impossible in our little back house. Although our house Mama is an incredible chief she worked outside the home so snack time (which is essential for lil' people) was hard to come by. We are so thankful for this experience as David & I love to travel & hope that our kids will too- we are definitely praying for other opportunities as our hope is to really take advantage of David's teacher schedule (no work in summers!). So stay tuned for Summer 2010!
Below is Nate with some of the locals- he was a gift (the meaning of his name) to this town! He was literally the talk of the town- I'm not sure babies get as big as Nathan in Tuis! Everyone wanted to hold him.
So thank you for your prayers & your financial help in making this mission trip a great success. The people of Tuis would LOVE to meet you!

End of Summer Highlights

This is the MacKenzie family (that's me) & Brown family (my brother Scott's fiance, Naomi's fam.) at Macaroni Grill. We all had so much fun together- I'm so thankful & excited to get to have her family added to ours (& vice versa). Naomi & Scott tie the knot May 30th. Such a highlight of our trip to get to meet all the people that have helped make Naomi the wonderful woman she is.
Here's Bella, our newest addition, & Dochie (short for Mackadocious) smooching. We've had Bella for almost a month now & it seems she's been here forever- she's so mellow & good with the kids. Nate & Noah climb all over her- she is pretty much the size of a small pony. Jeremiah, the 6 year old next door is terrified of dogs but Bella has even won him over- we are employing her- Doggie therapy.
Nate is almost as big as Naomi (good thing she does Crossfit, what she lacks in size she makes up for in quality- she's got some serious muscle)- the kiddos loved all the attention from Unckie & Auntie. Crazy Uncle Brian was out traveling the world so we didn't get to see him but word has it he may be visiting (maybe moving!!! nope not excited) San Fran. more often these days so hopefully we'll rope him in to visiting up here more too.
When we weren't at my parent's pool we were at the beach- the ocean was actually about 74 for the first few days! I got to go boogie boarding even! Noah would cheer me on when I would cruise in yelling & clapping "yea Mommy, good job!" Nate, fearlessly, charged the waves- if we weren't there to pull him back he would have been out riding the waves. Noah had to be tearfully torn away from the beach everytime- although that is nothing new- tearfully (that's being gracious) leaving is the norm around here. He's full of personality & ideas! ;) Oh & David was happily visited by a good swell so he & my brother got to surf A LOT.
Mimi & Papa Cruz got him a Big Wheel, Harley Davidson style that he loves. He started riding his trike about 2 months ago non-stop. Next to playing with cars riding his bike is his next favorite. So this will be a welcomed addition to his toy repertoire.

And we're OFF!

Follow us at:
www.costaricamissiontripsummer2009.blogspot.com
Here's our family pic taken for our Costa Rica Mission's trip which we will be leaving for on FRIDAY!! I've got stuff all over our bedroom; I just keep accumulating stuff- vitamins/medicines just in case, books, diapers, baby food, bribe toys, all the toiletry stuff, bug bite stuff, etc. I'm less anxious about the flight (read: LESS. not NO anxiety) & more excited about the actual trip. I wish I could just snap my fingers & we'd be there. I've experimented with benedryl & both kids do well on it so I'll give them some when we arrive at the airport Friday night (3 hours before our flight! yuck). I got a new pack & play by Phil & Ted that's only 5lbs & has sun shade & blow up mattress- Nate will be snoozing in style! (well hopefully) We found out that Taca airlines has no accommodations for infants (despite the $230 fee) so I'll be holding my large bundle all night- I'm praying for God to provide some sort of blessing to help with that as it seems difficult to hold him for 6 hours in the middle of the night- it would be different if he were 2 months as opposed to 11 months- he moves all around now. God's good- I know there will be some sort of relief provided. David has been working really hard to prepare as much of the mural that we will be painting on a very large public school wall. We are going to have a print shop in town (thanks econoline signs) print out the image on butcher type paper & then David is going to use a perforated tool to outline all the images so that we can just post up the images on the wall & then throw chalk on it so that the images will be outlined up on the wall & the kids can start painting sooner. Does that make sense? It'll (hopefully) be easier this way as it'll save David the time of actually having to paint/draw all the images once we are there. He's going to color code everything so that the kids know which colors go where. As for me during this part of the trip- I'm not sure- I'll probably be hanging out at the mission with other kids? We will have a blog that hopefully we can update while in Costa Rica; it is:www.costaricamissiontripsummer2009.blogspot.com
We covet your prayers & look forward to sharing with you when we are back!

Unplugged Crew

Some friends & I did an event in late May for 15-20 year olds & it was called The World Unplugged- dinner, dessert, music, a message & a dance by a dance outreach group. Pictured here are all the people who helped- be it table "hosts" worship leader, dancer, etc. Since this picture- Danneca (in black) delivered her seventh baby & Leslie (in peach) delivered her third! Almost everyone who participated is married with kids- I bring this up because it was a labor of love- they put their heart & soul into it despite having busy lives. It was soooo fun to do this with such amazing ladies! Can't wait to serve with them again!
